Another venue I often recorded promotional material for, in downtown Salt Lake City, was the W Lounge (now closed).
I’d just finished recording the now famous DJ, Steve Aoki, when the club owner told me an L.A band called Hyper Crush would be performing the following weekend.
Touring bands were notoriously hard to shoot, due to contracts, managers, promoters, labels, etc. I already had my foot in the door, though, since I worked there. Fortunately, they self-produced their first album, ‘The Arcade’, and this was their first tour, so I had access to do something good.
They were riding on the momentum of a 31 track mixtape that gained a huge following on MySpace. They’d get signed to a record deal with Universal Motown, I think within months after this show got made.
On my end, the production was not easy. The lighting situation went from extreme dark to insanely bright constantly, oscillating like wild. As nice as my cameras were, their apertures couldn’t meet the demand. I knew eventually the software of tomorrow would come along and give me the ability to do this concert justice. I shelved it, until a few weeks ago. Now, the colors, definition, resolution, and energy, are matched with a kicking soundtrack.
