Before Tom Bennett became a one-man band, singing outlaw country across the states, he fronted the music project The Saintanne, and electro-rock group Sex On The Run. He was also my best friend and roommate for 5 years. We got into a lot of trouble together. Probably a bit too much. But between the partying and our bullshit day jobs, we were committed to making art, and I think we inspired and motivated each other during that time. I aimed a camera at him whenever I got the chance, and there was never a dull moment.
The first time I became aware of him was at one of Jeff Hacker’s house parties, before Jeff became the biggest DJ in the city. Tom rolled in wearing a hoodie that covered his face. He broke out some crazy breakdancing moves in the living room, and then peaced out. ‘Who the hell was that guy?’ I asked myself. I never would have thought I’d be sharing a space with him. Or that I’d be in touch with him for the rest of my life.
Sex On The Run started off as a three piece band, with Tom on vocals, Nic Brown on bass and synth, and Chris Buck on drums. Since I’m posting two videos, this one focuses on them as a trio. After Nic left, he got replaced by Rob Roake on guitar and Travis Adamick on bass. The second video features that line-up, and both audio tracks have been replaced with studio recordings.
This is a song about zombies, and since I’m a huge fan of the genre, along with the rest of the guys in the band, I wanted to share this amusing logistical detail:
I grew up watching the films of George Romero, and his 1985 masterpiece, ‘The Day Of The Dead’, had been burned into my mind. I also watched it repeatedly as a teenager – IN UTAH. Now, somehow, the trajectory of my life led me to unknowingly rent an apartment, on the other side of the country, located directly on the street where the classic opening scene of the movie was filmed.
