I moved out of Salt Lake City in 2010, to an isolated cabin in Oakley, Utah. I lived there with my wife, Jenny, and my dog Jack. I started focusing on documentary work and animation, instead of covering band performances. My brother had moved out of state, and the other people I usually recorded with had gone their separate ways. Also, I no longer had the two cameras I used to cover events.
It was during this period that King Niko won the City Weekly award for best band of the year, and they had a lot of further success. I hope they’re still active.
When I unearthed this brief jam of a video, I couldn’t recall the circumstances of what brought Jenny and I out of seclusion, to Park City that night (we barely had any gear, and no means of recording audio from a mixer). How did we come into contact with the members of the band? It had to have been spur of the moment, out of appreciation. Guess it doesn’t matter much.
The master files were unfortunately long gone, and the only version was a tiny 68mb Youtube download. Ouch. I was going to call it a total loss, but every time I listened to these three songs, especially the final one, they made me happy. Their music put me in a good mood, which is no easy task. I needed to make the effort.
I knew the visuals would never be perfect, so I decided to go in the opposite direction and mess with them even more. I experimented with multiple layers of video, using different masks, blurs, filters, and color corrections and then stacked them on top of each other. I actually learned some cool tricks during that process.
