If memory serves me on this night, I had just finished shooting a promotional video for a nightclub, with my friend Dan. Exhausted, we went to Burt’s Tiki Lounge for a few beers. And then had a few more. I had all of my camera gear next to me, which attracted a scrappy young guy, wearing a worn out leather jacket. He came up to me and asked:
“Hey, are you recording the show tonight?”
“Uh, no. Just here having some drinks,” I replied. “What show?”
“For my band, God’s Revolver.”
“Right on. Sounds cool, but we’re just hanging out. We don’t work here.”
(Shot of bourbon)
“Would you be willing to film it for us?” he inquired.
“Do you have any money?”
“Nope.”
(Dead air)
“Is the bar paying for your tab?” I asked
“Yeah.”
“Could you put us on there?”
“Yeah, for sure.”
“Alright, fuck it. Let’s do this.”
I knew straight away the audio would be unusable. The bar had no mixing board to connect to, and I had no microphones except for the ones built into the cameras. Shit. Ah, well. If we captured the visuals, maybe someday I’d be able to replace the audio, I figured.
Looks like today is that much belated day. The band recorded their only studio album, and it had a raw live sound. The odds of it syncing with the live show were slim – but it did! I just needed to re-edit the footage to time it right, and I think it rocks. Cheers!
