Vital Organ Auction was founded in 1998 by Pastor Oilfield and Marshall Lawlessness, with three different band lineups creating unpredictable, structured, hard-hitting music with prophetic and satirical lyrics. The songs reflected chaotic and corrupt political injustice, exposing global social divides and depravity, while aiming to raise awareness for a better world.

The band played live only occasionally until 2001 in the SLC underground hardcore/post-punk scene, before becoming a studio-only project in 2017. The final chapter of the band concluded in 2021, as members pursued other artistic endeavors.
